About the Artist
Where the
visible
meets
the
imagined
Stephen Spartana (b. 1954) is a photographer and visual artist whose practice constructs experiences rather than captures moments. Using both analog and digital processes, he layers form, texture, and time — manipulating natural elements to create surreal, multi-layered environments with a painterly approach.
His visual language is rooted in the atmospheric and unusual, exploring transformation and connection between body and earth, between the perceived and the sensible.

The Collection
Every transparency is not an ending — it is a beginning.
Inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe and Pete Turner, this analog series fuses nude figures on black-and-white film with color flower studies through multiple layered exposures.
Layers of memory illuminated by light — something both hidden and familiar.
Digital imagery woven with analog photography to merge the human form with landscapes of growth and decay, revealing connections as intricate as nature's own patterns.
Where the boundary between body and landscape quietly disappears.
Black-and-white figures layered with flowers, water, and organic textures — visual strata evoking time, memory, and the deep interdependence of humanity and nature.
Like snowflakes, no two moments and no two images are ever truly the same.
Dreamlike layered compositions drawn from collections of photographs, exploring the passage of time, the fleeting nature of existence, and the beauty within constant change.
Recurring forms, rhythms, and relationships that connect all living things.
Built like a painter works a canvas, these layered photographs reveal the hidden connections between light, shadow, texture, and the natural world.
Moments suspended between memory and presence.
Ethereal figures merge with abstract organic textures in soft, muted tones a meditation on time, transformation, and our fleeting yet enduring place within the natural world.
Where movement pauses and water becomes architecture.
Photographed along frozen lakes and streams, this series reveals organic forms suspended in ice — light traveling through stillness to uncover hidden, abstract worlds.
Branches reaching skyward like veins searching for light.
A fantasy-inspired series layering trees, textures, and vibrant color to explore nature's hidden geometries and our quiet wonder at existence.
Where the boundary between self and nature softly dissolves.
Inspired by forest bathing, these multi-layered compositions capture the immersive stillness of trees and foliage — an invitation to pause, breathe, and become fully present.
Nature is not merely a subject — it is a presence, a collaborator, and a guide.
A meditation on time, memory, and transformation, where colors shift, forms drift, and landscapes reassemble through intuition.
My work does not document the instant, but rather constructs a visual experience by layering form, texture, and time — evoking an emotional and symbolic response that moves beyond pure documentation.
